About The Kimberley Climate

Climate

Located within the tropical climatic zone, the Kimberley’s weather is affected by the monsoon. The dry monsoonal climate is characterised by two dominant seasons separated by short transitional periods. “The Wet” extends over the summer months from November to April, with rain falling mostly in January and February. The rest of the year known as “The Dry” has little rainfall.

The Wet season is hot, humid and cloudy. Winds from the northwest and frequent thunderstorms bring most of the region’s 800–1,000mm annual rainfall. Roads can be cut off for weeks to months at a time as rivers swell over their banks and low lying land is inundated with water.

In sharp contrast, sunny days and cooler nights are typical of the Dry season when the southeast trade winds blow from the heart of the country. Away from city lights and pollution, the clear night skies are nothing short of spectacular during winter months where star gazers are rewarded by the bejewelled heavens.
